councillor olivia chow held a VERY interesting meeting tonight. we met with representatives from other cultural communities that would also be affected by the proposed provincial "raves act" (i.e bill 73).
representatives from the circuit party scene, pride day, the unity party, caribana, fashion cares, etc. all came out to talk. we figured the meeting would go in one of two directions - the various communities could have said "hey, this legislation should not be applying to my events, we should work toward tightening up the definition of 'rave' so that my scene will not be affected" or they could say "they are targetting a marginalized community and this is unacceptable so we will rally our community and stand WITH the rave scene in opposing this bill". fortunately, they chose the latter. so now we are planning a press conference at which representatives from all of these different groups - and these are groups with a significant amount of political clout - will be speaking out against the provincial bill. the tentative date for the press conference is this coming monday, june 12 but we will push it back if that is not enough time. should be interesting. post your thoughts. Good idea. I mean, sooner or later, this act WILL have a ripple affect on the other scenes, especially on the gay clubs...

it is good to hear that other communities are supportive of what the rave community is facing.
much thanks to those who are putting effort into this plight. peace, sabina "share what you know, learn what you don't." |

This is probably one of the best things to happen to the rave scene in a LONG time....
the fact that these other communities have chosen to see our plight for what it is, not just as something they need to figure a way out of..... too tired to think too much now but this is great news for us Astroboy out... |

After reading the bill, I can make the observation that the guidelines have to MATCH in order to hold any sway at all. You might be able to go around this bill by holding the events during the DAY as opposed to nights. Basically, the hours you miss from 2am-6am get appended to the beginning of the evening because you'll have to vacate at 1am, and you wanna keep all those hours, so the partie starts at like 4pm. However, I know that a lot of ppl would be working during this time as well, which is why it's prolly be unfeisible to try. Same with having the partie AFTER 6am. I dunno, I'm just ranting right now.
NEways, it'll be interesting to see what happens in the near future. Like if this affects things like Caribana and Pride Day, you'll have a LOT of pissed off ppl methinks. Hell, you might have to be careful about rock concerts too 'cause you can call sh*t like moshing a dance, can you not? And it could go till 2-3am maybe, and you have to pay admission, etc., etc. Personally, I think the government is looking for another fight that they almost can't possibly win. Well I say--- BRING IT ON, BIZNATCHES!!! (]=>FlipKyd<=[) |

um junior flip.. the government has already passed 2nd reading of the bill. and the fact that it states between 2am-6am doesnt really make that big of a deal, they will still crack down on raves. the fact that other communities may be hit because of the governments vaguness is now our advantage because we will have other more respected cultural communities on our side. i look foward to the press conference and hear what the other communities go to say.

i think itz great we have the support from other communities behind us. its quite clear that the provincial bill was not thought up well, because it is impacting sooo many different communities in such a horrible way. hopefully the bill will not be passed or it will be redone.
in different cities, the city or the mayor forms a youth council...so youth have the opportunity to express themselves...and not the viewz of the city or the mayor. i know mississauga, brampton, and markhem have one. these might be good people to pressure to speak up for our views. i know more stuff about it if anyones interested. thatz just a thought! lates! |

this press conference was pushed back because it is hard to find a time that will fit everyone's schedules.
olivia chow's office is working to find a date that will suit all the parties involved. i'll post the date once it is settled. Klubmasta Will |
