>>> Passports FAQ
Since there seems to be a lot of confusion nowadays, here's the deal on Passports from the US:
You DO NOT need a passport if you are DRIVING or arriving by land (passenger in car, bus, train) from the States to Canada. And you won't need one until June 1, 2009. You'll still need the usual birth certificate and drivers license or other photo ID. You DO need a passport if you are FLYING into Canada from the States. They probably won't even let you on the plane without one. And you'll need a passport if you are flying in from anywhere else in the world. Lots of time between now and then to get a passport, but I would suggest starting the process sooner than later so there's no last second worries. |

You don't need a passport to take the bus in, as that constitutes driving.
All you need is photo I.D. and your birth certificate. Though Chris it's actually 2008 when you'll need a passport to drive across.

no matter if you're driving or not, it's best to get it.
passport = generally less hassles at the border instead of the usual licence/birth certificate.

I'll probably be getting myself one for this event. I'm sure it'll be easier to cross the border with less hassle, that and I'm going to Italy in december

I agree. as far as taking the bus (and if your taking it on July) use it if you have one, and if you dont I would recommend to get one especially if it's your first time going into Canada. Regardless of the extended year deadline (june 2009)some of the border coustoms will still insist on you having a passport to gain entry. when I went up to Canada two years ago the first thing they ask for was a passport along with playing 20 questions w/ me on what, when ,where and why Im in Canada which can be real ball breaker Experience especially if your not being stright with them. There's no reason to not be straight with the customs officials.
You are attending a concert at the Opera House in Toronto. If they ask "who's playing" (a natural question), you can tell them. It's really no big deal. Don't let a confrontational border guard get to you. They're just doing their job, and from my own experience that's just how they operate. Just play it straight and there's nothing to worry about. |

Heh, Yeah.. The last time I went to Canada they asked me all these things, and I basically said as frolic suggested and had no problems. They asked where I was staying etc etc.. They just want to see that you have some sort of plan. They're looking for signs that you are lying.. and if you answer quickly and precisely it should make the trip through customs quicker.

Ok, LOTS of misinformation and rumors out there so I will do my best to clear them up in this thread.
I just checked out greyhound.com and on their own web page they say: Quote:
http://www.greyhound.com/travel_information/bus.shtml So, there you have it. Traveling in by bus is the same as any other land crossing. |

Thanks for the clarification! Can't wait for July.

Depending on how thorough they feel like being, yes. It is part of their job to run every single person through a quick background check. All they have to do is swipe your I.D. or type in your name and D.O.B and things like your criminal record and border crossing history pop right up on the screen. Our governments share the database, so the Canadian border guards will be able to see an American's criminal record, and vice versa. |

As retarded as this may sound I'm still gonna give it the old college effort, the worst they can do is send me back to the states.

Actually the worst they can do is ban you for life from entering Canada ever again, unless you spend years and thousands of dollars in legal fees fighting the ban.
