Outraged at Shootings
I am so pissed off about this right now. Why the hell is this happening in my city? I just don't understand it. This is not the Toronto I know and love. It's totally senseless.

string 'em up by the thumbs, give them water intraveneously, and forget about them... let them starve to death. quite possibly one of the worst ways to die.
that'll make other potential gunmen think twice. |

Shocking yes, but I'm going to give it a few years to see if this is any sort of trend. we've had 78 murders this year, normally it's around 65. The most was 89 in 1991.
Now compare those numbers with an American city of similar size. |

its major suckage. They should at least go back to the old cowboy ways where its a clear street and you both stand ten paces from each other and when the clock chimes you draw and fire. That way at least nobody else would get hurt.

Detroit has a population of about 1 million, its actually a little less, and they average about 300 murders a year. so I think its still safe to live in toronto. But thats just my opinion. If anyone knows the were abouts of shangrala then let me know, cuz ill move there!

2002 Murder Rates
City - # of murders - Population - # murders per 100,000 people. New Orleans 258 473681 54.5 Washington 264 570898 46.2 Detroit 402 925051 43.5 Baltimore 253 638614 39.6 St. Louis 111 338353 32.8 Chicago 648 2886251 22.5 Philadelphia 288 1492231 19.3 Los Angeles 654 3798981 17.2 Houston 256 2009834 12.7 Boston 60 589281 10.2 New York 590 8084316 7.3 Compared to Toronto in 2005 - 78 murders - 2480000 - 3.15 yep, this city has gone to hell I dont' want to hear about more shootings in public like yesterday, but I hope that was a one-off event. Leave it to the media to whip everyone into a frenzy though. |

check your statistics... my boyfriends sister is a 911 dispatcher for wayne county (detroit) and according to her... the murder rate for 2005 is 703 people so far this year... and it's not quite over yet... over half of those were firearm related homicides... which tells me.. that your estimate of 300 murders in detroit / year is LOW.. way low... i wouldn't worry too much about a random shooting... frolic has made the most evident point here... i just wanted to clear up the detroit issue... it's much worse here than people realize =) !!!

Looking at those crime rates for other cities, it makes me wonder how many of them go unsolved. I can't imagine how much work would go into preparing all the evidence and cases for so many of them. No wonder innocent people can go to jail when cops and prosecuters cut corners.

they probably just ignore the black on black crime and focus most of their attention on the white people who get murdered. i'm not saying its right, but it is a sad truth in many urban areas. |

honey you've obviously never been to detroit... haha.. 1st of all... 90% of the population of detroit is black... also... most all of the police and even the mayor is black... therefore i don't see this sort of thing happening... and secondly... your statement is full of non supported evidence... i don't think the police consider race when investigating murder... |

detroit is an exception to most major cities.
the way i perceive it is this : politicians don't try to solve issues of black on black violence. politicians make a public theater of endlessly discussing black on black violence without ever actually doing anything about it in an effort to make themselves appear caring and compassionate towards people of non-caucasian ethnicity while not actually having to do anything politically risky by taking action. that really seems to be how it works in toronto. here in toronto, i've seen a a crowd of 10 (mostly) black youth across the street beating the shit out of each other, some with weapons (thank god no guns) as a police car drove by without stopping. one problem among police forces, and especially here in toronto, is that many police officers who live in the cities most problematic neaighborhoods like Jane/Finch, St. Jamestown, Malvern, and Galloway/Lawrence just don't give a shit about the neighborhood they are suppsoed to serve. Being assigned to these neighborhoods is perceived as some kind of punishment. this leads to a problem of officers practicing a school of policing know as FIDO : FUCK IT DRIVE ON. and this is bad for our city, or for any urban centre for that matter. |

I don't think its really a race issue.
One thing that I will say however, is on my many trips to toronto I have seen only one police officier and he was on the highway. While in the city I have never seen a cop. And honestly if something were to happen, I wouldn't even know what number to call. Is it 911 up there too? |

i find you are more likely to see police in the suburbs. i live in scarborough, galloway and lawrence area. and you're right. it isn't a race issue at all, but its an issue that sadly gets racialized. in truth, crime seems to be more of a class issue than a race issue. people don't sell drugs and have gunfights and turf wars over them because of the colour of their skin... people sell drugs and fight for turf because they are POOR. |

I've called 911 before and the cops / firefighters were there in an instant. It's surprisingly fast.

cops have nothing better to do then to harrass youth in the suburbs. i am from Pickering and when i was 16 - 19, on many occasions, we would get harrassed by the cops for loitering outside a coffee shop. We would get chased into the forest for crying out loud. My name was taken down so many times i lost count. They even had Undercover cops come by..yeah all we were doing was playing hackie sack..Some ppl would drink in the forest and do drugs.. but i'm sure the cops have more important things to do then to harrass us. It was lame. |
