ive never been asked for my birth certificate when ive crossed - and ive done it dozens of times in the last 3 years. usually all they ask for is ID -most people go with their drivers liscenses or state ID cards. unless they hassle you, that should be just fine. even when we got searched once, they didnt ask for any other forms of ID. im not saying they wont... im just telling you that ive never had a problem. but ive always had my birth certificate handy, just in case.
good luck!

i've never ever ever been asked for anything other than an ID.
doesn't hurt to bring a pay stub though just incase they need proof you live in the US |

If you are a US Citizen, you need proof of ID and proof of citizenship. Drivers license proves ID, birth certificate proves citizenship. If you are a naturalized citizen, bring your naturilzation certificate. If you are a resident alien, bring your green card too.
Passport serves as ID and citizenship proof, but you'll still need naturalization/green card documents if those apply to you. Anything other than a US citizen or resident alien, you'd have to contact the canadian immigration department to find out what you need. |

According to the Canadian General Council, you do need to show proof that you are a US citizen - i.e. birth certificate, passport, naturalization papers, military id (certified copy or original). I had to check on this today, 'cuz a friend hasn't received his birth certificate, yet. That being said, I now have 3 extra tickets if anyone needs one. (PM please)
Also, a friend of mine just got back from Canada 3 months ago & she said it's a total hassle if you don't have proper id. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.html (link to Canadian Gov't) Good luck!! |

You need to be able to prove where you were born ... so yes you need your birth certificate, a passport, a baptismal certificate, naturalization papers ... anything that proves where your citizenship is. I've been turned away before for not having proper id ... good luck!

If all else fails, they don't ALWAYS check the trunk...
*edit* This is a joke, by the way. Mostly.

the only time we've ever been asked for our birth certificates is coming back into the US.
i say try to get it, but if you can't, take your SS card and plead ignorance. play the "dumb tourist"

If you have the time... I would DEFINITELY drive to get it. That's if he doesn't have a passport or something to prove his citizenship.
IT'S THE LAST HULLA!!!! Can't wait to see you there. Good luck. |

does the other guy have a passport?
hopefully you wouldn't have a problem .. just act like normal kids going to toronto for the weekend and you should be fine. (meaning don't wear baggy sketchy looking clothes while crossing, be respectful of the guard asking you questions, and give honest answers) |

You need a birth cert. and a drivers licence to get across. Most of the time they will only ask for a drivers licence & let you over, but if they ask for a second form & you cannot provide it, YOU WILL BE DENIED AT THE BORDER. Also, after todays terror attack in London, I'm sure that the border officers will be a bit more nosey.
(I live in Niagara two minutes from the border)
