5 pin bowling is Canadian-style bowling. In the states we have ten pins and use larger balls. In Canada they use 5 pins and smaller balls. The balls are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. I've never played five pin bowling so I'm not sure of the rules but a quick search on yahoo and I found this site. This is more in-depth.

Well we have 10 pin bowling here too.
*Mostly* 5 pin bowling is for kids...the balls are smaller and lighter...

I don't know much about 5 pin bowling, but I wouldn't say it's mostly for kids cause kids mostly don't bowl. It's a just a variation, not sure of the origin. My dad has actually been competiviely 5 pin bowling for longer than I've been alive. Having said that, I think I've bowled twice in my life.

When I lived in new england we had "candlestick bowling" it was regular 10 pins IIRC but the pins were closer to columns than the bulbous standard shape... the balls were smaller, hell maybe there were only 5 pins... i was only about 5 last i played...
oh well, bowling is fun! |

that's so weird that candlepin bowling is only in new england and 5 pin bowling is only in canada. who knew that bowling was so extensive? what a sport.
oh and candlepin does use 10 pins, just in case you did care! but i like to use the bumpers

the pins will be setup like this X.........X ..X....X .....X Where the X's are pins, (I use .'s because it gets rid of spaces automatically) the two outside pins are worth 2 points each, the two middle are 3 points and each, the head pin (front one) is worth 5 points, for a total of 15 points. Strikes and spares work the same way as in 10 pin, and if you foul over the line its a 15 point deduction. Also, i **believe** in 10 pin you only get 2 balls a frame, if thats the correct terminology, while in 5 pin you get 3 balls a frame, but if you knock all of them down on the last ball its not a spare or strike. Also, the "sweet" spot for a stirke in 5 pin seems to be hitting either three point and 5 point pin at the same time, that seems to work nicely, usually if you send it straight down the 5 pin you will split or get an ace. i REALLY wish i could have gone to this, too bad i turn 19 in 4 months i LOVE bowling! OHHH also i think a perfect game is a score of 400! I think i used to have an average of like 230 or something as a kid... i don't remember.

There will be an old lady there (the bowling alley manager) who will be on hand to teach you everything you need to know.
I think this bowling alley has existed for decades, it's got quite the retro feel to it, but I've arranged a sound system up there to get some beats going . I still haven't figured out the rules for our tournament just yet. But we'll get that sorted soon. |

can we use our bowling balls from the states for this? Or will we be required to use the smaller balls?

no... me and bill had been doing some research, and one of the only thing we were able to figure out is that the balls are smaller, so big ol amrerican balls wont work. you could prolly bring your own shoes tho. im going to

^shoes are the same but the balls are WAYYY smaller, they don't have holes either, just "cup" them in your hand. I remember i had a curve to my ball so I had to aim to the left haha.
