Anthems @ Hulla
How about if DJs had to call dibs on the anthems ahead of time? Or had a better idea of what went on earlier in the night?
Not that I mind a few repeats, but do we really need to hear Heartbeatz 5 times as we did in July? For me at least, one of the best parts of hearing a DJ spin live is that you don't know what's coming next and it's likely to be something new! Or is it?

I'm wondering how far ahead in thier mixing they plan though, I mean do they have a rough Idea of what they are going to do throughout the night, or do they just go out on a whim?

that all depends on the dj in question doesn't it? I'm still new to it all, but djs practice too obviously, maybe some rehearse? I can't imagine planning is unheard of. They have to choose which records to bring to any given party too.

It's funny, I complained about too many repeats last hulla. This time there just were not enough in general.
Anthems are the songs which stick out in everybodies minds, because they were immediately hooked probably on the first listen, which is perfect for new ravers! |

It's true that we kept hearing the same anthems over and over again at funtopia 7. I was starting to find it anoying at the end, especially since I'm not such a big fan of anthems. They're okay to bring the crowd up, but when you hear eyeopener 4 times in the same party, that's not bringing the crowd up, that's abusing.
They're a lot of good happy hardcore and freeform tracks out there that are just waiting to be played, so please leave the overplayed tracks alone... |

Well, if it's an anniversary party you're guaranteed to hear songs pulled out from over the years. In general the offerings at Hulla are the most upfront of any party outside of the uk.

Hey Weaver....
I'm a dj and when I spin out I just let the music come out however it wants to. When I'm throwin down a set the music guides me, I throw on a track and then I think...well...this one will sound pretty good to go along with it, and what usually happens is a nice progression of tunes. It usually starts off soft and sweet, gets a little harder in the middle and goes out bangin. Alot of times I'll start out with some Trance, progress into some Happy hardcore and go out with some d&b. I like to throw down a crazy mix of styles when I'm behind the decks. It always depends on what kind of mood I'm in. Sometimes it'll be straight trance, sometimes straight HHC or d&b. The only thing I wish I could change about my sets is the fact that I can't get any of my own music pressed on vinyl to throw down. But hey...eventually I'm gonna have some nice CD tables for that. I do know that there are actually alot of DJ's out there who will plan a set, they'll know exactly what they have to do to get from the beggining of the set to the end without messin it up, and sometimes the train wreck anyway. and if one of their vinyls are scratched they freak out and don't know what to do. But that's only some people I know.

As long as it's fast, has some good female vocals, and a good MC, I'm ready to groove

Some tracks need to be played more than once.
I remember when Eyeopener or Ravers Anthem or Shooting Star would all be heard three or four times in a night... and every time the place would go ballistic. I do think five is a little excessive, but I ain't gonna complain. MCED |

2 should be the maximum. The third time gets to be a bit much.
HOWEVER, depending on if your dropping remixes that could change things. So long as the remix sounds different enough. And especially if it's a previously unheard mix. I was always mildly disappointed though when the remix of Eyeopener came on. Sounds a little too similar and the first incarnation is just better.
