Ravers Groove on at Berlin's Love Parade
Ravers Groove on at Berlin's Love Parade
By Clifford Coonan BERLIN (Reuters) - Scantily clad ravers danced through the streets of Berlin on Saturday as the world's biggest street party, the Love Parade, returned for another year after narrowly avoiding financial collapse. Around half a million techno fans grooved their way through the German capital's central Tiergarten park at the 15th Love Parade, dancing to the latest electronic music blasted out by over 250 DJs spinning discs on 30 floats. Leopard-skin bikinis and outrageous wigs were much in evidence at the rave, famous for its heady mix of primal tunes, mind-expanding drugs and tons of rubbish, as were hundreds of red-and-white flags waved by ravers from neighboring Poland. "It's about the music and dancing. It's not important how many people are here, it's the kind of people who come," said Asha, a young reveller from Gdansk. The Love Parade made a loss last year, and with interest in techno waning, many Berliners fear its days are numbered. "There seem to be fewer people coming here each year. I think this is going to die soon. I don't know why though, techno music is getting better and better," said Tino Karde, 20, sporting blue-and-red dyed hair and a long brown skirt. Corporate sponsors and Berlin's Convention Center stepped in at the last minute to save the festival from extinction -- to the obvious delight of the revellers. "We've made a long drive for this but it's totally worth it. The music makes you feel great," said Marsha Tahapary, a 26-year-old consultant from Groningen in the Netherlands. Elisabeth, a 77-year-old Berlin raver, was clearly enjoying herself at the Love Parade, which had the motto "Love Rules." "You've got to experience everything. In my day you didn't have these kind of things, it's great to see all the people having a nice time," she said. The Love Parade, which first took place four months before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, reached the height of its popularity in the late 1990s when it attracted 1.5 million fans.
