The unofficial WEMF packing list thread

The question seems to come up every year from people going to WEMF for the first time as to what they should be packing.. here's what I've come up with off the top of my head.

The bare essentials
----------------------

A tent.

A mattress. You will not get a good sleep with music thumping in your skull while your back screams at you for sleeping on lumpy ground.

Ear plugs. For the same reason above.

A sleeping bag.

At least one change of clothing (including socks).

Loose change.

Either bring food, or have enough cash to buy food. Expect there to be a 50% fun tax. IE: If you're used to paying $2 for a street vendor hot dog, be prepared to pay $3.

2L of water (your mileage may vary depending on how much you dance, how much alcohol you consume, the temp, etc).

A flashlight/pen-light/mag-lite. If you step into the port-o-lets at 2 AM, not only do you want to know where you're aiming (in a guy's case) but if there are any other foreign objects in the port-o-let.

A few $ of bribe money in case you need to get a lift to the closest town or make a cell phone call and no one wants to seem to help you for free. I'm not sure how the shuttle buses are working this year, but you may need $20 for the return trip.

Money for parking. I'm guessing $10+. The lot may be full and some "enterprising" locals might decide to open up a plot of land / charge money.

Extras/Non-essentials
--------------------------

More water.

Toothbrush, toothpaste.

Sunscreen.

Towels if you plan to make use of the waterslide and other fun stuff.

Hand cleaner or soap (the soap dispensers at the port-o-lets can be pretty crappy at times. Hopefully not literally).

Some portable form of entertainment (book, frisbee, tennis ball, whatever). If the music shuts off during the day, the entertainment is rained out/not working/whatever, and you're too hot to sleep in your tent because it's 500C out, you might appreciate having something more to do than wandering around aimlessly.

Patience. If you get there at or after 6 PM on Friday, expect a huge lineup to get in. People also get crabby when Sunday morning hits. A lot of people haven't slept properly and just want to get home. Try to remember this .

One other thing: Don't necessarily expect there to be pay phones on site. WEMF two years ago was at the Dunnville Airport, and the nearest pay phone was a 1 hour walk.

That's about all I can think of.. If you've got more, or disagree with something, add it below...

Interactive Inflatable Zone/Waterworks (New For WEMF2002!)

Dance till you sweat and then come and cool off on our SUPER HUGE 40' long inflatable waterslide. If that's not enough, make your way though the rain tunnel and get hosed with a hundred other people at a time - or tackle the 24' tall Giant Slide to get commanding view of the party! When the fun in the sun gets to be a bit much, kick back on some extra-large INFLATABLE COUCHES! (Specially designed for industrial strength lounging - they can fit ten of your friends at a time). You can stay all day and night or keep coming back for more through a one time all access fee on site (independently owned and operated).

Yep! Last year I thought I'd try that and it went off great!

I brought a backpack with 12 bottles of water, two bottles of sprite, toothpaste/brush and underarm and 6 pairs of socks with extra shoes & flashlight

as for sleep, sleep was quite irrelevant all weekend long

For Shoes: I STRONGLY recommend you take a pair of shoes that are broken in but not at their worst...or near the end of their days...and do NOT buy a new pair of shoes days before the event and then go with them and try to dance in only those all weekend...this will cause lengthy sessions of ache!!! I know...the first WEMF i went to I had bought shoes the day before and my other shoes were beaten to crap so i pretty much wore them all weekend...i paid for it a plenty for the next few days ( mind you i WAS dancing a fuck of alot )

There are other ways to clean your teeth without a toothbrush / toothpaste. On top of that, you will likely be there for 36 hours (7 PM Friday to 7 AM Sunday). Not a 72 hour period.

I tried to be objective and listed things that you would need in order to enjoy yourself/sleep comfortably while there and get back home reasonably safely as essentials. As you can see in the thread already, there are people who are planning to go with nothing but their ticket (or not), the clothes on their back, and their reliance on charity to enjoy themselves.

It's easy enough to turn this into a flame war about hygiene. Someone else may find it essential to bring a bar of soap to clean their entire body as well as q-tips. Someone else may find it essential to have fresh fruits and vegetables. It's likely that if you have these kinds of needs that you'll bring them without having to rely on what's on this list in the first place.

It's all about buying a cheap pair of white payless shoes for the weekend - something that you can totally destroy through out the weekend, but keep you rnice pair of shoes with you - so when your about to leave the grounds, you change into some fresh new socks and shoes hmm

and you leave your now old shoes there...

I like two of Nub's items from last year: one pocket mirror, and one two-inch straw.
