I'd personally like to see raves go more underground! none of this buying tickets on ticketmaster...more TBA parties...
hmmm even when they had buses that would take you to a secret location, I was never part of that scene but that would be cool! The last party I attended was Destiny's halloween party, and all I saw was a bunch of young kids hoped up on drugs not even knowing there own name.. The scene I came to know and love was not about that, it was about the music and the DJ's...and the amazing people that had alot of the same outlook on life as you, could talk to anyone. Now it just seems like an escape for kids who are young and bored and want to get messed up |

I'm throwing a party in Philly on May 21st called Creation. It's mostly set up, but I need to work a few details out yet. I'll get more info out when I can. The club is pretty rustic and hand decorated. We plan to have map points too to bring back that old skool vibe. We may not have the best technology, but it works and people love it anyway.

the scene definitely doesn't revolve around the drugs, but they do something for it. I was at a rave on friday and most of the people I talked to were just drunk. I think I only met one other person who was rolling.

i'm not gonna bother reading 4 pages of replies, so i hope i'm not reiterating here, i just want to throw in my 2 cents worth....
it seems to me like the commercial machine has chewed up and spat out the rave scene. What raves were when they first started is incomparable to what they are now. As they popularized, the structure became increasingly capitalistic because it was possible to make money off them. Now they're not popular anymore, and people are still trying to make money off them. So what you get is mostly-legitimized parties designed to draw in people who've never been to one before and probably don't want to be there anyways.... i think you get the idea.... i'm having a really cynical day. shut up. :P

It's like what KUrt Cobain claimed in his bio.. that Oldskool is dead... lol i mean really in the early 90's it was at the prime of them hippie corporate tie busting briefcasers who wanted to milk every dollar from anything trendy, and so yeah the drug nation and all cliques surrounding it have kind of fell under too..and really, most original ravers have also grown and told soooo many other ppl that more younger ppl are claiming its the cool thing to do and get on the band wagon, yada yada... unfortunately most *hardcore*fans of whatever trend get dissapointed by the over-exposure, and some just say you know what fu*ck it now im apart of something cool....but i think something newer and cool needs to come on...hippies had acid, 70s ppl had blow 80's ppl had new wave n X n Meth and the huffers and all that sh*t that us lazy 90's turkeys want nothin to do with unless its cheap enuf for our lunch money.. lol i kinda see most of us as a Generation Echo rather than anything of our own to take so lets invent some new trippy drug/era to claim ...lol i have this theory that money is compoundable into somethin cool anway so some physist should give it a shot!! lol ....yeahh ramble on.. i bet this thread is dead now anyway.

What do you consider "underground"? Coz I consider underground having an illigal party in a warehouse space... not the Opera House or some other type legal venue with flushing toilets and running water.... the kind where you have no idea where the party is until the bus rolls up to it. The kind where if you were driving you went to a meeting point to get a map. Raves will never be underground anymore. They are certainly not going underground. They are only decreasing in popularity.

That doesn't prove anything. Those parties (while awesome), are a lot smaller than most of the other sold-out events a few years back. The fact that a party sells out doesn't mean that popularity is increasing, unless that party in comparable in size to the behemoths of yesteryear.

That's true. Even though we can proudly label the last Hulla as a sell-out, it's a disservice to the memory and legend of our events back in the day (selling out 4000+ person venues) to make much comparison between the two or to imply that they're comperable achievements.

I just realised that this thread is FOUR YEARS OLD. The first post was in '01. I think that really says it all that this topic has been going on for that long.

There is still an underground scene in Toronto. It's small and the parties don't happen all that often but it does exist. |

It is simply illogical to assume that something that is based on you not knowing about it doesn't exist beacuse you don't know about it. Logic people. Logic.

this thread is intense
ok, the title of the thread is "is the rave FAD dead?" and I will stick to the topic, YES the rave FAD is dead, because it is not popular, it is no longer a FAD, so of course no 4,000+ people (and I do say people, coz they weren't all ravers) at parties anymore. But I wouldn't say that raves are dead, or that the scene is dead. There are still parties going on every weekend, and although the past 2 parties we threw were at smaller venues, they did sell out, and that was us getting out more people than we expected, hence a good sign that things are on the ups. The rave FAD won't officially be back until we have 1)Wheelchairs at parties 2)Strippers at parties 3)Lots and lots of Randoms and Newbies EVERY party... Number 1 happened at Funraiser this weekend, anyone else see dude in the wheelchair with the painted spokes? |
