rofl @ this thread
buuuut 'dance like no one is watching' is probably the honestly best advice, as well as the expanded 'don't be shy' version don't you dare waste half your night being totally self-conscious and then realize in the morning that you won't get a chance to live those hours again!!! if you're feeling awkward, you won't let go of it by standing in the back hoping you'll somehow magically warm up and be totally into it and THEN you'll start dancing and meeting people. you've gotta get over it yourself, have some conversations and you'll realize everyone there is waaaay friendlier than you might understand at first and won't be wanting anything except to be your friend. GET STARTED WITH MEETING PEOPLE BEFORE YOU GET INTO THE BUILDING or you will waste time on warming up... chat in line, chat on the streetcar, chat at the premeet! and get yourself kicking on the dancefloor even if you know 100% for a fact that your lamest, oldest uncle can dance circles around you... even though its super easy to get hung up on, seriously, NO ONE CARES HOW YOU'RE DANCING BUT YOU... and everyone would LOVE having one more, two more, a hundred more bodies on the dancefloor with them, whether they're busting killer (overpracticed-in-the-mirror-at-home) moves or they're just jumping up and down... the vibe of the dancefloor just comes from everyone in sync with the music and thus in sync with each other, not out of some silly breakdance fight with a team of So You Think You Can Dance judges. ..aaaaaaaand finally, as a counterbalance, don't get so uhm shall we say hyper and get so totally hung up on "oh my god i can't waste any second oh my god oh my god oh my god" that you waste the entire night running in circles and don't spend any time really appreciating any part of it! it's perfectly possible to meet 300 different people in one night... but you won't remember a single face, a single name, or have any interest in adding any of these random MSN addresses to your contact list when you get home. meet some people for real, spend some real meaningful time with a few good people, even if you're totally bouncing around like a tigger the rest of the night. same goes for spending some good, solid dancefloor time... not running over the speakers, waiting 4 seconds to figure out which track is playing, realize its the coolest track ever (just like you realized the last one was and the next four are) and then running around for 15 minutes to find your friend to alert them that it's playing, then forgetting what you were gonna tell them when you finally locate them in a corner of the smoking area. AND DON'T SPEND THE WHOLE DAMN NIGHT IN THE SMOKING AREA! ABSOLUTE NUMBER ONE STUPIDEST PLACE TO SPEND YOUR TIME AT HULLABALOO, the only exception being if you haven't smoked in like 3 hours and really need ONE cigarette, or if (much better) you need a break for fresh air. but seriously, ever since smoking was banned inside, i've watched so many people blow so many amazing hulla nights sitting outside in the grimey makeshit patio chittering away like squirrels and chain smoking themselves to death. save all that nonsense for the after party!!!

Hahaha, this is why Courtney posted about not getting lost in the bathroom...The first thing I told her was that she would want to stay down there, but that there is a whole party going on upstairs that she is missing. I've known someone to miss an entire set being social downstairs in the washrooms! |

bring a pen and a notebook too. i never do the "sign my book" thing cuz it's too much effort. but it's good to have it in case you meet someone you really want to keep in touch with

being a newbie it may be hard .. but don't let it all overwhelm you.. enjoy it as much as you can... and don't worry about how you look while you're dancing... if your having fun and not ruining anyone else's fun, then you're doing just fine!!!

PLUR= peace, love, unity, respect. Funny story. i went to visit my Dad a few years ago and he has a t-shirt on that said "plur" over top of a photo of a bunch of ravers dancing. After laughing my ass off, i wanted to know where he got it... zellers. sheesh. he had no idea what it was about, it was just on sale. and there were like five different styles of plur shirts. i tried to get him to sell them to me.
These suggestions are all great! i wish i had time to repsond to each one individually, but i'm busy nursing and trying to sew a skirt intermittedly...(dont go to a big rave when you have a VERY small baby and expect to have time to make a fabulous skirt...thats my advice, though the skirt does look awesome!) i can't wait to see you all on Sat!!!! i'll have bracelets, pixie sticks and lotsa hugs... (im also a hulla noob~!!) |

also, i am a more or less hulla noob so i should't talk but...
from the few i've been to... wear comfortable, cheap shoes that you don't care about (because otherwise your back or your legs will be killing you the next day) bring deodorant and use it between sets... try not to look like you're messed up around security (and be super polite to security because their job kinda sucks)... also, don't check anything too valuable and don’t bring it with you inside either (though I’ve never had a problem at a hulla, I have spent many nights at the opera house at shows (even played the oh a bunch of times) and I’ve had bad experiences with having my stuff and my gear ripped off there. also, I’ve had friends have jackets taken somehow even though they were checked (though, this is probably impossible now because of the current rules)… ALSO … if you check a backpack or something, DO NOT LOOSE THE COAT CHECK TICKET (they make you wait until everyone has left and there’s just a small group of you who lost your tickets. Then after 6 am they try to figure out what belongs to who…) Also, beware of the molson kick, rev, redbull and … type of drinks unless you can hold onto the energy boost for the 4 hours after last call. You may crash early if you’re drinking too many of these. And if you mix these drinks with other things outside of the world of alcohol, the hangover is brutal and you may pukey pukey Buy your cds/box sets towards the end of the evening (if possible) for obvious reasons… also, you may never get the sweat stain out of the shirt you wear if it’s white… (believe me, I know all too well)… |

Do not barf on the dancefloor. If you must, find an abandoned knapscak on the edge of the dancefloor instead. Or some pile of clothes... as long as you can hide it.
