ya, ive always crossed through the Michigan border, and ive found that normally when they ask you where ur goin and if u have plans to stay anywhere over night, just be upfront and they shouldnt give you too many problems. Like Chris said, just be honest, say your going to a concert at the opera house.
plus, im hoping ill get less shit when i flash my Military ID..lol |

I was thinking about borrowing my Grandparents SUV for the drive so we could fit more people, but we have different last names and I don't want to create any extra problems at the boarder. Has anyone done this or have any idea how they'd react if my name doesn't match the registration?

It shouldnt be a big deal, they rarely check car registration, I drove a car in my moms name TONS of times to canada and we have different last names

Oh, one thing I remembered that happened during All Good Things was that there were so many people driving across the border the guards began to learn about the show. That's not a bad thing, it helps everyone that they know there's a big event going on that a lot of Americans are traveling up for.
So don't get thrown off if they tell you "So, you're going to see Anabolic Frolic?" or otherwise seem to be very knowledgeable about the event. Hulla is a legit a promotion as anything, so don't feel the need to come up with some cover story (well, it's a bad idea period). |

Oh, and also make sure you have all the information about where you are staying (i.e. hotel reservation, name/address/phone number of the person you are staying with, etc). I've had them actually call the person I'm visiting to make sure they knew I was comming. |

with AGT it was ALSO the weekend of wemf, so we got asked repeatedly if we attended a rave. Our friends in a car in front of us had gotten pulled over to be searched so we I just said we went to some clubs and bars and he let us through.

You could easily show your ticket to the opera house. They even have the Opera House logo on them this time.

For whomever was worried about the car registration - coming home its a bigger issue than going into Canada. When mine was registered to my mom, EVERY time I crossed the US border guards asked me who owned the vehicle. (I cross almost every other week.)
Both sides run ID cards for a much longer period of time now, and ask a lot more questions than even 6 months ago. I'd suggest a passport for everyone, because the US guards have been hassling people who don't have one. |

I am planning on taking a car that is registered under someone else, so hopefully all will go well. All I care about is getting to the party. If the States don't wanna let me back then screw it. I'll just stay in Canada!!!!!!! :-p

Well, that's a good point you bring up. The tough passport/id stuff is being pushed by the US, not Canada, so more than likely it's getting BACK into the states that might cause a hassle, not actually getting into Canada.
Do you feel safer yet ? |

tougher ID is being pushed by canada as well. I went quite a while rarely having to show mine entering canada, or having them just glance at it and send me on my way. Lately they are actually running the license and waiting for the results, entering the reason for the visit, etc.
Also, remember if you (or anyone in your car) have a DWI or any offense relating to drugs you aren't allowed in canada for 5-10 years. I remember some friends going on trips for a bachelor party not realizing someone in the limo had a dwi, and they had to turn back as a result. I wish it weren't so expensive/time consuming to move up there! |

yeah the passport issue with the US has seen some changes as of the begining of this year. I went on a cruise to the carribbean (bahamas, virgin islands, etc) at the begining of January and they had just implemented some changes including Canada and Mexico. We had to present that friggin thing a lot in the course of a trip out of country, especially since we flew. I mean every time we even boarded the boat and stuff.

My SO was caught at the boarder with a pill and a half (one crushed) in his wallet and ended up getting turned away - the lawyer claimed it wouldn't cause him any more problems aside from him being flagged and he will be searched everytime. We have crossed the boarder twice now with no problems: you just can't lie about it. I'm not sure about the DWI though. Has something changed from last summer? He paid the fine and the lawyer said that should be okay: we both plan to go to grad school in Canada so he looked into it. |

^^^ lately it has been taking longer and longer to get your passport, even if you renew it. they say to allow ten to twelve weeks. hopefully it won't take that long, though.
i still have to go and renew mine, i'm going to expedite it so it will get here in like three weeks. |
