The PRT and the battle group are entirely different entities. The PRT is responsible for training leadership for the Afghan National Army and the Afghan National Police, as well as co-ordinating humanitarian relief projects in the province. The battle group is, and has been since February, responsible for eliminating the Taliban. Plain and simple. Here's a true story for you. Canadians built a school in Panjawai, which the locals were delighted to have, as no resident had recieved a formal education in that region for upwards of 20 years, and the townfolk were completely illiterate. The school was also a contact point for international relief organizations, and the location where Canadian medics would come and have 'free clinics' for the citizens. I use the past tense because the Taliban came to this school one day this spring, barricaded the doors and windows, and burned the school with dozens of children and their teacher inside. I'm sure if we just ask them nicely to stop, they will. Source: People who were there. |

Well, according to people who are higher up than you the PRT morphed into the battle group. So, the Canadians went there initially to help with the reconstruction efforts and now all they are doing is hunting the Taliban in this failed war. Also, Opium production have sky rocketed since the fall of the Taliban and there is a ressuregence of Taliban fighters. So, I don't see what they(the Alliance) is accomplishing. Also, I'm aware the Taliban are despicable. Nevertheless, Canada is in alliance with a nation that has broke so many Geneva conventions and threatened a sovereign nation(Pakistan) they would be bombed backed into the Stone Age if they did not join their Alliance. Canada is tarnishing its reputation by being part of this Alliance. Last edited by astralkid : September 22nd, 2006 at 01:42 PM. |
