yeah Gabber would be a perfect addition to Hulla. At least instead of 2 trance sets get 1 trance set and 1 gabber... But i like HHC headliners!

I'd be ALL about hearing some *NASTY* hardcore beats dropped at a Hulla.
Granted the anthems and sing-a-longs are cool, but one can only stomach so many moments where we should stay here forever, or where our heartbeatz, that go boom boom boom before you want to wad up into a ball of rage and scream for some downright nasty powerful BASS coming out of the speakers. And to anyone who disagrees, this is my....boomstick! j/k But seriously, I'd love to see Raoul or Dominik drop a seriously nasty Gabber set at a Hulla. Tyco's set at the last Hulla finally made my head turn early into the night because it was very uncharacteristically un-Hulla, which made his set so gosh-darn awesome (My Angel, Never Lost His Hardcore, Sickz Daze, etc). Big ups James for doing something completely different than the average Hulla DJ when you got your hour to play with. We need more variety at Hullaballoo's, and the the HHC line-up with some jungle/trance to mix it up just isn't cutting it. I'm talking variety in the Hardcore scene itself. If Hullabaloo is supposed to showcase the best of the best in the Toronto scene then why are we seeing the same cookie cutter DJ sets and predictable UK headliners playing remixes of anthems DJ's here have been caining for months and months? To me this isn't the cream of the crop of the hardcore scene, to me, these are the same DJ's, playing the same re-hashed hoopla that's been bouncing around the hallowed halls of Hullabaloo for the last 7 years. What about CLSM, Stormtrooper, Druid, Oli-G, Mozz, Sharkey, Robbie Long & Devastate, AMS, Lee UHF? What about Dair, Ethos, Kaos and all the other big UK DJ's that do their own thing but simply aren't 'Hulla' enough to get a booking. Hardcore isn't about the cheese anymore, and granted that the big cheesers may still draw the biggest crowds its starting to be rapidly felt across the hardcore community that the scene must move on and evolve, otherwise we stand to experience a meltdown of our scene much in the way the UK HHC scene imploded on itself back in 98. But then again, I'm just an opinion |

errr, the scene here has already experienced a meltdown, far worse than the UK's, and Hulla is the only promotion left from it's era still kicking. What the scene needs here more than anything is just more promoters. It's not up to me (or at least it shouldn't be) to carry the entire scene and provide everything to everybody. |

Good points made Chris,
I wasn't aware that a good part of my list had attained Hulla bookings in the past (my Hulla attendance began with Digital Outlaws and is going on strong! ). I'm just worried that Hulla has become to much a cookie cutter image of itself. While the vibe, which is always out in full-effect to make sure the ravers are having a blast, seems to be wanning somewhat. More and more I keep hearing about how 'the good old days used to be' and if I'd only raved Hulla 'back then' and how these parties aren't what they used to be. By no means stop having Hullabaloo because of a dissenting voice such as my own. I'm merely trying to express that some serious inroads or changes must be made to the Hulla vibe and formula lest it become vulnerable to becoming stale and old. I don't know personally how many others felt at Funtopia7, but my general feeling at the party was 'oh, its just another hulla, yay.' I guess I'll dance to the Headliner, hang out upstairs chatting to my friends and maybe catch a DJ set that isn't the same anthems and hot tracks that every other DJ is playing. (Tyco's set was a good example, not cheesy, but bouncy enough and varied enough to get heads turning and bodies groovin') I'm just afraid that a couple of years down the line Hullabaloo will be written into the history books as the last dying bastion for the North American hardcore scene. I want nothing more than to be as far away from that truth as possible, because I think that the people that form Hullabaloo, who have brought us such greatness for over 7 years now, can emerge from this and take the aging Hulla vibe and message and spread it to all of the sub-sectors and sub-genres of Hardcore to bring them together. Because its only with *US*, the ravers that love the music and what it represents, that we can show the rest of the world (or in this case the immediate area) that HARDCORE WILL NEVER DIE! I've heard alot of threads like this "Jungle at the next hulla" and "more hardcore at the next hulla!"
If everyone sides with the person, do we get it? Or is this just a question?? But anyways, yea that would be awsome!.. rotterdam is the same at gabber? ..?? uhh.. ...

As long as we keep it strong, we'll never die!! STENGTH IN NUMBERS!!! Lets all keep on partying. Newbies are the biggest aid to our scene. Without new ravers, the old ones will eventually wander away and, with no one to "replace" them, the scene will dwindle and die. I'm not going to let that happen!!! PLUR, Chip

Well, I think it's a little early to write Hulla's obituary. My 2 most underperfoming parties both fell on the same july long weekend, last years anniversary and this one. So if any change is in order, it's to shift that event back or forth a week or 2. An extra couple of hundred people makes all the difference. We then followed up the 6 year anniversary (the least attended Hulla ever) with our most successful event of the year in September.
People can lament about the good old days, but guess what, those days are gone forever. And there's absolutely nothing I alone can do to bring them back. To get us to the point of attracting 4000 people with production budgets of $80,000 took the work of dozens of promoters cultivating the scene for YEARS. Having said that though, there's been many a Hulla at the Opera House where all the talent who have seen it all walked away feeling that that was our best event ever. As Chip says above, the true key to success is a steady flow of new blood. That's always been what has driven the scene forward. When the really big events were happening more new people were being introduced to the scene than ever (I would guess any given Hulla had 500 new ravers at it), and then factor that week in and week out. This is what is keeping Hulla alive today when other promoters are floundering. It's a natural progression that what worked for you when you first came in no longer does it for you anymore. People get bored, and they move on. Some stay, but most go. Many years ago I put the scenes turnover rate at almost 100% over 2 years. If you were to take a photo of the crowd, and then one again 2 years later, you'd not see any of the same faces. So, for us we've been through several generations of partiers. Even at our height, with the biggest events, people were no longer coming because they had been there and done that. Anyways, I respect your comments, I'm just sharing some insight from the other side to show you that these issues are far more complicated than just booking a new dj. |

And what Chris said that the old dayz are gone: the music has changed along with the crazy and insane warehouses venues we use to have but the least the disk jockeys could do is to grab there classic records and start spinning early 90's hardcore jams to get the oldschool vibe : ) |
