No, actually... first offence is $255. Second offence is $5000.
I didn't intend everyone to get all pissed off and start arguing. I never intend to make other ppl suffer from what I suffer from as well. I simply asked what our options were going to be... NOT if we could continue to smoke inside around everyone else. |

It may be hard for security to justify taking smokes and lighters... neither are illegal things, and that would cause alot of people to be frustrated, just for the simple fact that smokes are expensive and, especially if they just bought a pack, having security confiscate them would /not/ be kewl. At the very least, the said ravers may want a smoke AFTER the rave is through... denying them that would make for some angry people. PLUR, Chip

I may be wrong, but taking away cigarettes and lighters, which are perfectly legal items, without posting signs all over the place saying no cigarettes allowed in the building, and offering the opportunity to leave your smokes somewhere, constitutes theft.

Ha ha ha... right on, man!!! I'm right behind you on that one!!
I can totally respect that they dont' want me to smoke in the Opera House. In Kingston we're not allowed to smoke inside any public buildings (we're not even allowed to smoke on patios here!!), and I won't smoke inside any public buildings in TO if the law tells me not to but, goddamnit, no one's depriving me of the means to have a smoke after the rave!!! It's like a cigarette after sex and, I'm sure most smokers will agree, a must!! PLUR, Chip |

They don't need to post signs. They perhaps might not be able to take them away from you, but they can say "I can't let you in here with that" and refuse entry. Compare it to a closed bottle of booze. Perfectly legal for you to carry it around. Get caught trying to bring it into any club and you'll be refused entry. Once inside, I'm sure they are within their rights to take it away from you. Or tell you, "either give them to me or you have to leave". Remember, any establishment can make whatever rules they want. They own the place. Especially if the rules are made to coincide with the law.

You can't really compare it to a bottle of booze, though, man. Alcohol intoxicates you, and is sold inside of the venue. By bringing in your own alcohol (as with closed bottles of water, etc.) you are depriving the party of possible revenues. Additionally, you can easily hide other mind altering substances inside of an apparantly unopened bottle of alcohol. They're going to have a hard time testing that. With a pack of smokes, they can open up the pack and pull out the smokes to check, if they're unsure. Also, if your'e hiding pot in there, it kind of gives off a rather strong and... pleasant aroma. I've seen security guards opening peoples' packs of smokes and smelling them (it happened to me at my first hulla, and made me giggle). Also, they tell you NOT to bring your alcohol on the flier. So really, there are no signs needed, because they already made it clear. There aren't any announcements that they'll take your smokes away, so if they do it at the security check, it's not very fair, now is it? because if people knew ahead of time, they wouldn't bring them. Can you show me where on the flyer it says that you can't bring alcohol? That doesn't matter though either way though. For Opera House, since it's an all ages event, by law you would not be allowed to bring alcohol in. It isn't allowed to be anywhere other than the 19+ area. It has nothing to do with whether its an intoxicant or not. It has to do with whether the consumption of it within the venue is legal. But that's neither here nor there. here is what is on the flyer though: "Right of Admission Refusal (ROAR) in full effect." Which basically means, "we can refuse your entry for whatever reason we want". At the end of the day, I doubt they will take your smokes away at the door. They wouldn't take your alcohol away at the door or a water bottle away. They would most likely say, "you are not allowed to bring that in here". End of story. You can either a) get rid of them and come in or b) not come in. We're all unfortunately at the mercy of the law and venue. |

I'm sorry, but rules are rules. And if you feel the need to break these rules, then maybe you shouldnt attend at all. I myself am a smoker, but if I'm not allowed to smoke at hulla, then I wont. its that simple. Smoke cigarettes, or go to hulla?

I've been to plenty of parties where you had a choice at the door; either take your smokes back to your car and go through the line again, or throw them in the box and hope they were there when you came out. It's been going on for years in other cities... they have no problem just throwing your shit right in the garbage, no questions asked... so you can bitch all you want, but in the end you're just gonna have to deal with it.

um...Shane, I was at the Opera House last night there IS a sign that says the law is now in effect and cigarette smoking inside will not be tolerated or something similar to that anyways. you wanted a sign, there's your sign it was wonderful being at the concert and coming home not reaking of cigarette stench. those who got searched were told that cigarettes will not be smoked inside under any circumstances anywhere in the building. =
