Smoking @ Opera House

Well, the "smoke 'em if you got 'em" weekend is now over.... and as of June 1, smoking inside Toronto restaurants and bars is strictly prohibited.

Although smoking inside the Opera House was, in the recent past, generally not allowed, but for the most part permitted in the upstairs bar area... now this will not be the case.

Since the Opera House has no 'outdoor patio', and Hulla's have never had ins-and-outs, what are the options for us nicotine addicts who may not be able to quit in time for July 3rd?

Food for thought.

Get the nicotine gum, at least for the night... I'm not a smoker, so I really don't know, but I wanted to try to help.

I dont know what options you have. But I am really happy! The smoke agravates my eyes and really bothers my asthma. Not enough for me not to go of course, but I will really enjoy my experiance more without the problems I hope there is some area smokers can smoke... but I doubt it ;(

Uh, we all know people are still gonna smoke in the Opera House, people were smoking all over the dance floor/downstairs last Hulla just like all the Hullas before that. Probably will be the same this time around, it may be against the law but than again a lot of things are that go on at a Hulla. ; p

The bests ecurity will be able to do is tell people who are smoking to stop, they couldn't throw them out because than they'd have to throw everyone doing it out which would be a very large sum of people and that could only escalate into worse things.

Than again Hulla could take a smart step to designating an outdoor smoke area, but we know they won't do that.

At the Elmo for HOTC we werent allowed to smoke on the main floor, i don't smoke, but i sucks for the people who do... they had to all hide in the bathrooms and just smoke away in there...and secuirty will walk around and tell people to put out there smokes. If they don't they will get warnings such as "next time i see you smoking you'll be kicked out" ALmost 80% of the rave scene smokes sooo i dunno how this is gonna effect everyone...we will all still smoke inside either way, but still

I'm guessing the main floor was the Hardcore room. I was smoking up there a lot of the night along with other people and wasn't told once to put it out, I was evening smoking right in front of the DJs with security nearby.

Odd.

I think this is great... I'm certain Keron and myself are jumping for joy at this moment in time... we no longer have to suffer in such a smokey place since we are non-smokers.. why must I second hand smoke if I don't want to!

as a smoker, i have no problems with going outside or to a designated smoking area if there is one set up. in NY we have had this law for quite a while, and although i still wish you could smoke in bars I understand why and dont mind going outside. One thing you can't do is just tell all the people that do smoke not to. It won't work, people will continue smoking on the floor just as they always have. I suppose you could throw these people out but to throw people out for smoking cigarettes would seem pretty extreme compared with what many other people are doing. it would also kill the attendance at future parties.

Unless security, when searching people, won't allow cigarettes or lighters to enter the building.

Having non-smokers suffering in a smoke-filled building will not make for the greatest Hulla.. especially those with asthma

i've been inside venues before that hurt my eyes and made it hard to breath because there was too much smoke. i'm not saying that non-smokers should have to deal with it. what i am saying is that arrangements must be made for people who smoke. whether this be a seperate room, outside patio, in/out privileges or whatever.

I'm done with this thread until frolic posts how its gonna be handled.

i agree with you completly...like i said before...the venue owner of elmo was vary worreid and wouldnt let smoking on the all ages room happen. This left many people very pissed and brought the vibe of the whole party down..it even made me pissed and i dont even smoke

man the whole expectancy of going out is that at one point or anotehr you'll have some sort of liquid splashed onto you, you will be covered in sweat (your own or someone else's) and that you will have the smell of smoke on ya...that just all goes together..i dunno how people will last not being allowed to smoke in bars *during the winter at least*....dancing around with a beer and a smoke just goes hand in hand and parties/clubs/bars such like that....maybe people will just drink and smoke in their own homes

I think if people know ahead of time that there will be no smoking, they cant really be pissed. I too am waiting to see what frolic says about this.

I have yet to speak to the venue about this. Obviously the law is clear and smokers are just going to have to get used to not smoking when they go out to Hulla or anywhere else. I've DJ'd in lots of cities around the world over the years to smokeless raves where their laws were ahead of ours. It's been done all over and people have adapted.

Having said that, I had an idea to use the barricades for the line as a small corral or something for smokers once the line is in since I can understand that going without for the whole night could be difficult. The problem is there is lots of residential around there and noise is a problem so it couldn't turn into an outside chill area and restricting it to a handful of people can turn into a logistical nightmare. We can't just let people wander in and out of the venue as well as it's a security issue and the cops hate loose crowds and we don't want to bring unwanted attention from them.

I will post a definitive announcement about all of this once I've spoken to the venue about how they're handling other shows between now and then.

It's not just a matter of what the opera house feels like doing - if people are smoking inside and they aren't stopping it, both the smoker and the owner are subject to punishment.

Oh, just to make myself clear if I wasn't; There will definitely be no smoking allowed inside, the law is the law. The only question left is if something can be accomodated otherwise, like outside.

Thanks Chris! Pretty much all I was looking for was what we should expect before arriving. Much appreciated you looking into this.

(Perhaps the barricaded area could be on the side-street ... using the door off the floor stage-right?)

I am the first person to smile about this law

I will not be breathing in your cancer sticks anymore.

I'm actually worried this " law " will not be dealt with accordingly.

Honestly, what is security going to do to people who bring smokes in? Are they allowed to take them and throw them out in the same effect as if they were any type of illegal drug? I'm aware cigarettes are not illegal, but cigarette smoking, will now be illegal in buildings such as the opera house ( which was supposidely smoke free but i have never, once, ever seen it enforced. which has always pissed me off )

Seriously, i'm not pointing any one person out. But those of you who do smoke, pack your coffin nails up, and get outside!
