The best of the unknowns: Jonathan Carrol, who writes what are called "magic realism" novels. Bones of the Moon, A Child Across the Sky, and particularly Outside the Dog Museum are all totally able to make you laugh cry and think all at once. Absolutely my favourite books.

"Survivor" by Chuck Palahniuk is one of my favourites. If you liked that also read "Choke" by the same author, it is hilarious - but i still prefer "Survivor" of those two. My all time favourites that i recommend to everyone are:
WHITE TEETH by Zadie Smith CATCHER IN THE RYE by JD Salinger AUTOGRAPH MAN by Zadie Smith I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE by Wally Lamb RUNAWAY by Evelyn Lau Right now my favourite play that I recommend to read is: THE MISANTHROPE by Moliere |

I want to read that so bad but it's going for like $150 once the movie came out A couple people names some real good books already. Survivor is my favorite by Chuck Palahniuk. Steven King rules as well. But I have to say the best book ever would have to be Ishmael: A Journey of The Mind and Spirit. It's a huge eye opener and something everyone should read at some point in their life. |

It's a tie. Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Lord of the Rings. Douglas Adams and JRR Tolkien are the 2 greatest writers of the last century. I also love the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, and everything by William Gibson. Apart from that, I love medieval English poetry (Chaucer, Malory etc), anything by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Bruce Sterling, Neal Stephenson, and I also enjoy Cold War-era espionage stuff like Hans Herlin's "Solo Run", older Tom Clancy ("Without Remorse" and "Red Storm Rising" are the best) and most stuff by Robert Ludlum.

My favorite book is Blindness by Jose Saramago.
It explores both humanity and society in an often horrific, but ultimately triumphant light. Be careful, this one is pretty cathartic and can suck you in. |

My favorite: Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card
I can't even count how many times I've read that book in the decade since I first picked it up. And I swear it gets better every time.

I'm going to suggest
The Pornographer's Poem by Michael Turner The Otherland books, by Tad Williams The Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare The Dune series by Frank Herbert (and the prequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson) 2001: a space odyssey and The Trigger by Arthur C. Clarke and finally, I get my fantasy fix from R.A. Salvatore, either his Forgotten Realms books following Drizzt Do'Urden, or the DemonWars saga.

Don't know if anyone will read this since it's been 2 months since the last post, but I'll through my two cents in anyway.
I've seen Trainspotting listed a few times. Definitely, in fact anything by Irvine Welsh. But for anyone who's a raver, I would have to suggest anything by Jeff Noon, but especially, especially, ESPECIALLY Vurt. Every raver should read it. It's awesome. |
