Crossing the Border Laws
Make sure your appearance is not cause for suspicion (probably not a good day to be wearing your "legalize marijuana" t-shirt!). Customs inspectors do have the power to ruin a everything.
This is what the Canadian governement Law says a child under 18 must have:
• a valid Canadian passport for the child.
• a legal document proving that the child has the permission of the lawful parent (s) or guardian to travel and includes contact information for the parent (s) or guardian. Such a document must be specific for each trip.
I also found this online from someone who has crossed the border:
We have been going to Canada for the past 3 weekends. We cross at the Sumas, Washington border [an alternate to crossing at Blaine, Wash.]. There are at least 3 custom officials at each station. Every car is searched as you pull up to the booth. They have stated that if you do not have your original birth certificate they may detain you for up to 4 hours while they confirm your birth place.
I'm not trying to ruin anything for you .... I just don't want you to drive all the way to the border and find out you can't cross because I would be upset.
