Announcing the Hullabaloo Complete Archival Project
Featuring the online release of EVERY recorded Hullabaloo set! Yes, you read correctly, we're releasing EVERY live set we have from Hullabaloo! The Hulla tape library is one of the biggest rave tape libraries in existance, and a virtual history of hardcore raving in North America! Due to bandwidth constraints we will be releasing a new mix once a week, starting with the oldest. You're going to be able to follow the emergence of Hullabaloo and happy hardcore set by set, party to party. Every set is historical in some way, and most of these sets feature the north american debut of virtually every happy hardcore song you can think of. Most of the visiting UK DJs made their north american debut at Hulla as well, so you'll be hearing a lot of first times. I'll not only be releasing every set that was previously released through the HullaStore, but as well as any sets that never saw a CD/tape release previously. As long as we have it captured somewhere, it will make it online. Most of our library is hardcore related, but we also have our 2nd Arena headliners recorded featuring trance and hardhouse. This is all part of a larger more complete archival project. In the coming months we will be posting EVERY picture in my archives from Hulla, as well as encoding video clips. The result will be a complete archive of one of the most important rave movements, online forever for future generations to enjoy and learn from. It was a special time for all of us who were there, and now those nights will live on forever. A link for each mix will be posted in the new Hulla Recordings forum. People can respond to each thread with their comments or track IDs. I'll also write up a little blurb going over a little of the history of each set. When this is done, hundreds of hours of live recordings will be here. What's exciting about having this library is that all these parties can be relived forever, instead of forgotten once the sun came up. It was a time when giants walked the earth and we can go back whenever we want. FAQ: Q: So where can we download them? A: At the new Hulla Recordings forum on our board. Q: Can we post the mixes elsewhere, like a P2P? A: I won't stop you. Just keep the file names unchanged. Q: Can I request a set to be released? A: We'll work through them slowly. I won't be jumping the order, so you'll just have to wait for your favorites to turn up. Q: What quality will the files be encoded at? A: 128k 44khz MP3 Q: Will you be posting track listings? A: I won't be, but a new thread will be created for each release and the trainspotters can fill those in. Q: I have an internet radio show, can we play your recordings? A: Knock yourself out, just make sure you tell your listeners where it comes from. Q: Can we link to your MP3s directly from our website? A: The files are protected against that, you'll have to direct people here first and then they'll follow the links themselves. Q: I really want to hear the All Good Things sets, how long do we have to wait for those? A: You'll be waiting well over a year. At the release rate of one a week, it's going to take a long time to get through everything. The box sets will still be for sale while supplies last so I'd suggest getting one now which will also score you a nice case to keep it in. |

kudos
I just want to express my appreciation and admiration for this archival project, which will provide not only a great database of memory and movement but also a valuable and unique research resource (for up and coming DJs, new promoters, and for scholars like Yours Truly). This project's scope is at least on par with, if not ahead of, the most ambitious online projects being hatched in academe--and those only happen with massive funding. This here is a generous labour of massive love, and I wish you all the best with developing it.

thanks Chris! |
It would probably make sense to bittorrent these guys, at least while theres a ton of interest. I'm not familiar with the process though.
I know how to make a torrent file, but unclear what to do after that. If anyone would like to chime in. |
FRISKY PACIFIC SUN

Nah I turned off limewire just long enough for it to finish downloading. I got it about two hours after my last post. I figured I could set back my Full Metal Alchemist addiction two hours in exchange for Spinback and Ruff. |
frolic, to setup a torrent i believe you need a tracker for the torrent, i don't know how that works. It would be great if you could just release a friggin massive torrent with all of the mixes in thier own folders and organized and all, then everyone could seed that.
if we do use torrents we NEED DEDICATED SEEDERS, or it will die. I'll seed for atleast 30 days (i can only upload around 100kb/s) if you want to go this route. |
This torrent thing confuses me... I think is better just to host all the mixes like in a site and also Weaver is right, seeding can take a long time
|
hehe i think i'll try to explain torrrents to everyone
torrents are wierd becasue its not like conventional Peer to peer transfering, so thus here how torrents work: 1) The website hosts a torrent file, which is openable in any bit torrent program, Bit comet and azureus are the most popular I believe. 2)This torrent file is very small, only 50kb, so the hosting site does not need to waste massive amounts of bandwidth hosting thier files, then can simply host a torrent! 3)So, the process is this: -Get a torrent program (Bit comet I really like) -Click on the link to the torrent file hosted on the hulla site -This should automatically open up your bit torrent program (such as bit comet) and it will start looking for sources to download from. 4) The last point above is the beauty of it, the sources it looks for are other people just like you and me, people who AREN'T the websever, and they upload the files from eachother. Each source you can download from is called a seed, the more seeders the faster the file. Now this is a great philosophy, but the only problem is the torrent can "die" is what the term is called. When there is no seeders, no one else can get the file to seed it, thus its kinda a catch 22. Just right now im trying to get the frolic set from return to the vibe, and there were no sources. But it started downloading, meaning someone with the file opened thier bit torrent cilent and has it in thier list still, thus allowing it to upload! Since im nice, once its done i'll keep my bit torrent cilent open! NOW, if you have a slow connection, yes its generous to upload, but you can set limits on the upload speed! So, set an upload speed limit that wont start killing your internet connection. Seeding is nice, but no one is asking you to blow up your modem! wow thats a mouthful! |
There should always be at least one seed, and that would be me.
We had over 100 downloads of the spinback set today alone, so the bandwidth gets eaten real fast. Maybe we could bittorrent the files initially while everyone is grabbing the latest, and then archive them later as a direct download when it's only a trickle. The other bonus of bittorrent is that I encoded my set from Return of the Vibe at 192k. We'll probably write some sort of proper faq with links if we impliment this fully. |
yeah i think your the seed, uploading at about 50k?
anyways torrent at release sounds like a good idea, we don't want the site to die hehe. |
holy eff that's a lot of hardkore!
|
jesus... i seriously cannot take this... i can't believe it took me this long to get online and post about this...
frolic.. ur the bestest ever |

torrents won't work if you change teh file name, (I don't think.... _) |
man, i wish my computer was working right now... because it isnt! and if it was, i have a 512kbs upload speed, and since im hardly ever home, i would totally dedicate half of that at least, haha!

I made that post before the decision was made to use torrents. |
